How to Decide Where to Invest Your Time
To continue from my previous post about cutting back on the number of projects we are all working on, the next question that comes up is:
“How do I decide what to keep and what to drop?”
Considering that the reason we want to cut back on the number of activities we pursue is to increase our enjoyment of life, we want to make sure the activities we keep will give us the most joy.
Now, there are several reasons why we may have taken on too many projects. Covering them would take more space than I want to give it, and the bottom line is that it doesn’t really matter anyways.
Let’s just say that some reasons are positive and others are negative.
Either way, 2 things will help you make a decision.
First, what do you ENJOY doing? If you focus your choice of activities based on how much you enjoy the activity itself, that will help you decide which ones to keep and which ones to let go.
Rank them in order of enjoyment, start at the top of the list, and keep everything you have time for. Drop the rest.
Frankly, if you enjoy running around like a crazy person or sitting on the couch watching TV all evening, then go right ahead and do it. It’s your life. Do with it what you will.
However, if you’d rather have a different experience, then this is the time to decide HOW you want to live your life.
Second, WHY are you doing each activity? Pay close attention to whether your reason is positive or negative.
If you’re doing something because it helps other people, or because it’s part of a plan to create something wonderful, either for yourself or for your community, that’s good. For example, reading these posts may be part of a plan to empower yourself so you can increase your effectiveness and spend more time doing the things you enjoy.
If you’re doing something because you’re trying to prevent failure, or because others expect you to do it, then you may want to rethink that one.
The bottom line truth is that you can make a living with any activity. “There’s a million ways to make a million dollars” as I used to say.
If you’ve read my 2nd book, “Keys To Power Prosperity“, you may remember the story of how I met a man who was getting rich providing janitorial services. (Hint- the key was in getting a contract to provide services to apartment complexes and hire other people to do the actual work.)
People get paid to shop, to take vacations, and even to have sex. You can make money doing anything. A few months ago, I read a story about how someone else found a way to make money playing Frisbee. (Hint- the key was to get the manufacturer to sponsor a publicity tour.)
The key to living a happy life is to focus your time on doing the things you enjoy, and if necessary, making that the source of your income. It’s possible. You just have to make the decision to believe it’s possible, and then follow up with intentional effort to make it happen.
One step at a time will get you anywhere you want to go. Just start where you’re at, and move one step closer whenever the opportunity presents itself.
And sometimes, you may need to create the opportunity yourself. And that comes back to willpower and manifesting. The core focus of this whole series.
