One of the most common techniques for creating change is the use of affirmations.
If you want more confidence, tell yourself, “I can do this!” and then do it.
If you want to stop smoking, tell yourself, “I am a non-smoker.” and believe it.
If you want to attract a better relationship, a good one to use is “Love is an ever-present reality in my life now.”
And a good all-purpose affirmation is “I can, and I will.”
The basic idea behind affirmations is that when you focus on an idea, and maintain that focus long enough, the message seeps down into your subconscious mind, which maintains your beliefs and generates your emotions, which often motivate you to one type of action or another.
In other words, it’s like you’re manually steering the plane until the autopilot kicks in.
In general, it’s a sound idea.
But there’s a problem with it.
Before I explain the problem, I want to take a moment and point out where affirmations do work.
When you tell yourself, “I can do this” and then follow through and actually do it, the experience is stored in your memory, and the next time you need to do something, you have a history of success that increases your self-belief.
In other words, it’s the experience that makes the change, not the affirmation.
The affirmation served merely to motivate you to action.
The problem most folks have with affirmations is that they repeat them over and over again, but never take action.
No action = no change.
I remember years ago, when I was first learning all this, sitting at home repeating affirmations like “I am wealthy. Money flows easily into my life now and always.”
The problem was, the next day, when it was time to go out looking for a job, I didn’t feel wealthy.
I didn’t feel confident enough to submit those job applications.
I felt like the failure I was.
And I wondered where all the money that was supposed to flow into my life was hiding.
Now, I will say that, over time, I’ve seen real magic and miracles. There IS a power beyond the physical that can make things happen.
And it CAN be triggered using affirmations.
But not until something else is in place.
