A Surprising Trick to Motivate Yourself

Most personal development systems suggest that the best way to reach success is to bite the bullet and use your willpower to force yourself to do the things necessary for success.

They promise that the more you do it, the easier it will get.  You just have to get over the initial hump.

One of the main reasons so many people fail to follow through with their New Year’s Resolutions past January is because getting over that initial hump feels more like climbing Mt. Everest.

It’s HARD!  Especially if you have a long history of giving in and giving up on your dreams.

There are 2 simple things that can change this.

First, forget about willpower. It just sets you up for failure.  Instead, take time to indulge your senses.

You heard me right.  Indulge your senses.  Hear me out.

Most of us have little difficulty doing the things we WANT to do.  No willpower is required to get ourselves to eat, sleep, or make love.

Sure, we could promise ourselves a reward for doing what needs to be done, but that doesn’t work as well because we have to go through the awkward, frustrating, or even painful part first.

What if we got the SAME PLEASURE from doing the “have to” stuff as we did the “get to” stuff?

We can.

The first step is to indulge your senses, and pay close attention to the details of the experience.

The next step is to relax as deeply as you can and replay the experience in your imagination.

Now, I shared with you in an earlier post how to make imagined experiences just as vivid and satisfying as real ones.  Here is where you really want to put that into practice.

Go deep into your mind and vividly imagined an enjoyable experience.  Allow it to fill your mind, and imagine it filling your entire body.  This will help you make a POWERFUL connection with your deeper mind.

Now, once you’ve done that, anchor it in place.

Ask your deeper mind to give you a symbol to represent this enjoyable feeling.  Imagine this symbol multiplying many times over and being inserted into every cell of your body, showing up in every part of your mind, and being placed in every location you go in your normal life.

This instructs your deeper mind to give you pleasure on a regular basis.

Now, specifically imagine this pleasure symbol connected with the things you know you should be doing to reach your goals.

In fact, if you want to kick this up a notch, ask your deeper mind to give you a symbol to represent the work required to be successful in whatever you’re trying to accomplish.  Doesn’t matter if it’s making more money, improving relationships, breaking old habits, or anything else you’re working on.

Get a symbol to represent the work involved.

Now, see both this work-symbol and the pleasure-symbol, and mentally merge the two together.  See them becoming one symbol. A work-pleasure symbol.

If you’ve relaxed deeply enough, and have visualized this with enough detail, you will now find that you get much more enjoyment from the work required to accomplish your goals.

And since it’s more fun to do, you won’t have to push yourself to do it.  It’ll just come naturally.
