Dropped BFM for aMemberPro

For those following along with the conversion process on the PowerKeys Publishing website, this may not be too big of a surprise.  After all the various things I've had to fix, modify, and tweak to get working, I ran into one problem that I just couldn't solve.

Unfortunatly, it was the last problem standing in my way of reopening the new website.

All through this process, I've held aMemberPro as my backup option, knowing that it works well, and although it may not have some of the 'hot' marketing features of BFM, it is a solid system needing no fixes.

I ran into that last problem on Monday.  After working on it all day, I sat down to evaluate how to proceed.  How many of the new tricks could I get aMember to perform?  I spent a good part of Tuesday investigating the possibilities.

Finding that most, if not all, the BFM features I planned to use could be duplicated in aMember, I started working on the new conversion Wednesday.  Things went better than expected, and as I write this (Thursday afternoon), just about everything is done.

In fact, the site is a LOT better than it was using BFM.  We now have member's-only forums.  The download system is handled much better.  More payment options are available.  Affiliates get better statistics on their promotions.  And there are many options to expand the system further.

Besides setting up the signup process (a relatively easy thing to do), I have a few pages to edit, mainly because the signup process is different.  Although aMember could be modified to produce One Time Offers (the major feature of BFM), it's not elegant, and after thinking it over, I realized it may not be the best approach anyway.

Whenever I've promoted someone else's site that used OTOs (One Time Offers), I've always felt the need to inform my subscribers about it so they knew what to expect.  Generally, my promotions have done well for the site in question, so pre-knowledge of the special deals was not a problem.

Plus, I have this nagging feeling that it's more fair to let people know up front what options are available.  I appreciate that, and 4 choices are a lot easier to deal with than the wide range I offered through the shopping cart.

BFM problem has been fixed

Some folks may wonder if my intuition was broken the day I decided to buy into Mike Filsaime's Butterfly Marketing package.  I can now report that my intuition has been validated.

Another customer of the BFM package has released a fix for the PayPal problem I ran into.  This means that when I feel the BFM system is appropriate for a new website, I can implement the site without having to worry about whether I can accept PayPal payments or not.

Plus, the whole BFM experience has shown me that I can tackle programming challenges and succeed.  This has given me the confidence to start planning out my own website software package, which I'll start creating later this year.  This will be a part-time venture, and I won't even announce it until I have a working version ready for testing.  This may be 1-3 years from now, but that's okay.
